The Fight Against Unlicensed Contractors

This recent announcement from the Nevada State Contractor’s Board Newsletter made me want to reinforce the dangers of hiring unlicensed contractors.

Contractors: Join The Fight Against Unlicensed Contracting

The Nevada State Contractors Board is inviting licensed contractors to help fight unlicensed activity in their neighborhoods.

The Board, through its “Unlicensed Contractor Awareness Campaign,” is asking licensed contractors to help by displaying a poster and distributing brochures to educate homeowners about the dangers of hiring licensed contractors. Contact the Board for your informational packet that includes samples of brochures available online, an Unlicensed Contractor Hotline to report unlicensed contractors, handouts and laminated “Unlicensed Contractor Awareness” poster.

Please e-mail your name, company name, license number, address and phone number to: Ranys Botros, public information assistant at: rbotros@nscb.state.nv.us.

From the Nevada State Contractor’s Board October 2010 Newsletter

Unlicensed contracting has become a big problem because of the economy. You have those who are looking for extra money and deciding to use home repair and installation as the means to do so. You also have homeowners who are looking to save money and are tempted by the deals unlicensed contactors give them.

However, hiring unlicensed contractors carries huge risks. First, is the quality of the workmanship. The unlicensed contractor may not meet the quality standards of the industry or be familiar with safety codes. Poor quality work can be dangerous and a huge liability, especially if someone is injured.

The second risk is that an unlicensed contractor can take your money and walk away without doing any of the work or leaving the work unfinished.  Homeowners have little to no recourse if an unlicensed contractor disappears with their money.

While it is appealing for homeowners to hire an unlicensed contractor to save money, the risks are too high. Homeowners must take the steps to protect themselves and their homes from those who are looking to take advantage of them.
